Description
Caryota urens (Jaggery Palm, Sago Palm, Toddy Palm, Wine Palm) is Medium-sized to large, fast-growing, monocarpic palm with a single, sturdy stem clothed with fibrous leaf bases. Arching, broadly linear, 2-pinnate, dark green leaves, to 6m long, have 6-50 obliquely wedge-shaped leaflets, to 30cm long, of cream flowers, 1-3cm across, are produced at the end of the tree, then from each leaf axil downwards. The sugary sap is boiled down to make crude sugar (Jaggery), or is distilled into toddy. Height 12-25m, Spread 10m. Native of India, Sri Lanka, Malaysian peninsula.
